Should you use Facebook Workplace as part of your membership site?

A friend asked me a couple days ago if he should consider using Facebook Workplace for his membership site.

On the surface, it sounds reasonable – all the benefits of having Facebook manage the community infrastructure, with plenty of extra features over e.g. a private FB group.

Now, you already know how I feel about Facebook, but regardless of that, here’s the thing: Facebook Workplace is $3/month per person. After you hit 1,000 users it does drop to $2/person, but… damn.

I suppose if you’re running a site with a high monthly fee, you could justify that. I mean, at least you’re paying Facebook, so maybe they won’t completely take advantage of all your data… maybe? But then again, all of my other objections to Facebook still apply, so… why bother?

My verdict on Facebook Workplace:
